One is that the stories aren’t just summations of what the Bible says, but actual sections of scripture. I enjoy how they make the focus of every story to be on Jesus. I truly enjoy finding Jesus in every passage of my Bible as I read and I like to emphasize this with my kids. So to have a children’s Bible that helps in this is something that I appreciate. I like the effort put into the activities they include with each story, but I do find some of them to be a bit on the cheesy side.

Overall I have enjoyed this Bible and I look forward to reading through more of it with my kids.

I received a complimentary copy of the book for review purposes from Tyndale House.
<![endif]-->
Billy Graham in Quotes is a collection of personal and published quotes edited by his son Franklin Graham and Donna Lee Toney. I have enjoyed reading some of Billy Graham’s books over the years and so I was looking forward to reading a compilation of quotes from him. I thought it would be a great get to read quotes that spanned his lifetime. It is kind of like getting a “best of” compilation.

The book is broken up into chapters that consist of quotes focused around a variety of topics. It is really interesting to read his thoughts around different topics that we all have to deal with in life. I appreciate that Billy focuses himself on Jesus Christ and his quotes reflect that he knows Jesus is the answer for the world today. He has years of experience and many lessons learned. I appreciate learning from men who have walked with the Lord for years.

I enjoyed reading through the quotes and I would recommend this book to others as well. The story follows the cousins Patrick and Beth and their adventures in Mr. Whittaker’s imagination station. This continues their adventures as they try to help save Mr. Whittaker’s friend Albert who has been captured by the mysterious Lord Darkthorn.
I read this book to my 4 year old son. At first he wasn’t really interested as there weren’t many pictures, but as I started to read the story he really liked it. We read it over several days and each day he would come and ask me to read him some more. I liked how the cousins proclaimed the gospel in a dangerous situation, that they delivered a Bible and I liked how the cousins worked together. I would recommend this book to young kids and to parents who want to start moving beyond picture books with their kids.

I received a complimentary copy of the book for review purposes from Tyndale House.
It starts with a basic timeline and then moves on to languages. It delves into archeology and the texts used for our current translations of the Old and New Testaments. It looks at the history of the church and the use of the Bible in recent history. Plus it contains copies of ancient documents that are historically significant.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I loved the historical information and the removable documents. To be able to see what the actual ancient manuscripts look like helps make it all the more real when reading about them. The author’s personal interpretation does come through regarding the value of certain documents as well as in the Bible’s “effect of civilization”. However, I think the author does a good job of presenting the story of the Bible and is a good resource for the historicity and authenticity of the Bible that we hold today.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com <http: com=""> book review bloggers program.
</http:>

Changed by Fatih

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 119px; height: 179px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-drWDWsxrkd4/TYkoX0xob2I/AAAAAAAAADw/tux-LpNjwJ8/s400/978-1-4143-3622-0.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587041202498727778" />
In Changed by Faith by Luis Palau he presents to the reader Jesus Christ. He takes a look at what many Christians take for granted in having Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. He invites the reader to let Jesus be the directing influence in all aspects of his or her life. He backs this up with many pin point scripture references. You will also find many encouraging stories from his life and the lives of other believers who have allowed Jesus to be the director of their path.
I really enjoyed reading Changed by Faith. I found the book to be encouraging and inspiring. It prompted me to pray through how I am using my life right now for the Lord and how I can truly let Him be my Lord and Master in every aspect of my life. I would recommend this book for the young believer as well as the seasoned veteran of the faith. Luis’ testimony and that of others paired with scripture is a powerful tool to challenge each of us to truly live our lives completely for the Lord.
Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Max Lucado's Hermie and Friends DVD Box Set

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 199px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_AU21wJsWy0/TWq5g6mOU-I/AAAAAAAAADo/V13zMecFCV0/s400/Hermie%2Band%2Bfrieds" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578475063588312034" />
At the end of this last week I received a copy of A Bug Collection DVD Box Set by Max Lucado. It contains stories for young kids designed to teach them about prayer, bee-having, and getting along with others. Each DVD is about 45min long including an introduction and conclusion with Max and Hermie talking about the story and learning the same lessons.
When we received the DVD set we were looking forward to having another fun movie for our kids to watch that would reinforce good behavior and values. We watched the story Busby and the Grumble Bees with our son. My wife and I understood the message and our son could identify it as well, but we were disappointed with how it was presented. Most of the story focused on the bad behavior with the characters learning to do the right thing at the end. But as a result the songs and actions that our son remembered and repeated were mimicking the bad behavior that the story was trying to illustrate as being bad. In addition Max’s comments before and after didn’t model what we would like our kids to do. I previewed the other 2 discs and they followed the same pattern. I understand the lessons that they are trying to teach, but I would prefer the bulk of the story and songs to mimic good behavior and values.
I would not recommend these to other parents and we will not be showing them to our kids.

Questions Christians get asked and answers

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 119px; height: 175px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TVF1aex3fYI/AAAAAAAAADY/cAi_6FC3rAY/s400/978-1-4143-1591-1.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571363311833283970" />
I recently received a copy of The Questions Christians Hope No One Will Ask by Mark Mittelberg. Mark focuses his minister on apologetics oriented outreach and went to the Barna Group to find out what were the questions Christians feared the be asked the most. Each section of this book addresses a specific question and works to provide the reader with scripture references and a practical knowledge base needed to respond appropriately. At the end of each chapter is a summary, tips for talking about the issue and questions for group discussion.
I was intrigued to find out what the questions were. While I didn’t find myself surprised that the included questions were being asked, I don’t know that I would have put them all in a top 10 list. I appreciate Mark’s style writing. While books like this can easily be geared towards winning the argument, it was refreshing to read solid evidence and have it applied with the final goal of winning others to Christ. It is important for Christians to know what they believe and why they believe. Not forgetting that Christ died for us all and that we need to speak the truth in love. This book is a good reference for Christians to think through some of the hot topics in today’s society. I would also recommend that after reading through it the reader should take some time with their pastor for a more solid foundation.
Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

A fun children's bible

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 265px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TVFmF_spFCI/AAAAAAAAADQ/XKgbRu92g84/s400/_225_350_Book.345.cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571346467218068514" />
I was looking forward to receiving a copy of the newest children’s Bible, Read and Share: The ultimate DVD Bible – Volume 2 by Gwen Ellis. Having young kids (ages 3 and 1) it is fun to get new books to read together to give some variety to the stories that they are already getting familiar with. This book contains 105 bite size bible stories and also comes with 2 DVD’s following along with the book. It contained a nice mix of both Old Testament and New Testament stories.
Each child’s bible has its pros and cons. They all leave out large chunks of scripture, but have fun artwork and try to boil key passages down to simple messages of God’s love, etc. I found this bible to have a nice blend. It was fun to read through with our kids using the small amount of scripture included to reflect on more of the whole story that my wife and I could share in more detail with them. This was true for both our kids. The DVD’s were a nice bonus and a special treat to show the kids. It is nice to have some fun movies to show them on special occasions. While I don’t think this is the best book ever (and I don’t know if I have one) I would recommend it as a good option to parents with young kids.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program

Voices of the Faithful – Book 2 by Kim P Davis and Beth Moore

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 218px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TS02zJJ9yTI/AAAAAAAAADE/eMrVG-ynSrU/s400/voices%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bfaithful" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561161367131375922" />
This is a one year devotional containing the stories of Christians from around the globe. Each month has a different theme with each day having a verse followed by a related story and a short prayer. The appendix of the book contains reference material regarding missions. This includes a message from the International Mission Board, how to pray for missionaries, the church’s roll in missions and information about the authors.
I appreciate the heart that this book was written with. I have a heart for missions and that is what initially attracted me to the book after reading its brief description. I do like the stories of missionaries serving around the world and how the Lord provides for them. Hearing the testimonies of how the Lord provides is good and healthy for fellow believers to hear.
While I like most of the content, I don’t think this fits as a devotional very well. It fits more as stories to read than insight on scriptural truth to start the day with. The appendix at the back does have some good general information and exhortation to pray for those in the mission field.
I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program

On This Day in Christian History by Robert J Morgan

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 115px; height: 115px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TNhb_6dySqI/AAAAAAAAAC4/eCBBdtJ5oOk/s400/on+this+day+in+christian+history.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537276895436098210" />

On This Day in Christian History by Robert J Morgan states it is a compilation of “365 amazing and inspiring stories about saints, martyrs and heroes”. Each page is a short historical entry with an accompanying Bible verse. In the back there is a topical index so you can search for similar historical accounts. Overall the book offers a quick and easy read to get small glimpses into how others of faith lived.
I like history and I especially enjoy reading accounts of believers, so after reading the title of this book I was immediately drawn to it. I have enjoyed reading though the accounts and I have marked numerous entries for future reference. While it does not label itself as a devotional it is laid out in that manner, but I would not recommend this book as such. The accounts vary greatly in how “faith” is portrayed and I would not recommend them as all being good examples to model. As is the case with church history, much was done in the name of Jesus, but it doesn’t mean it was right. I was pleased that for the most part the accounts were written in a historical and objective style. In addition, I found many of the scriptural references to be a stretch with the entries. But in all, it is an enjoyable read.
I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program

The Prophecy Answer Book by David Jeremiah

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 160px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TLfaZ520yjI/AAAAAAAAACw/3WHWvrEa5zQ/s400/51vZohoaB8L._SL160_AA160_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528127206182930994" />
The Prophecy answer Book by David Jeremiah is a pocket size compilation of answers to common questions regarding Bible prophecy. It covers current events, the rapture, the tribulation, the Antichrist, the second coming, the millennium, and the new heaven and the new earth. Each section lists commonly asked questions followed by a brief 1-2 page answer. The answers are often tied to scripture references and historical evidence where applicable.
I have a few other Bible prophecy books by various authors and this is by far the most condensed. David addressed some of the most common questions considered the brevity of his book he does a decent job of providing insightful answers. There were several answers that left me wondering what his real point was, but for the most part that wasn’t the case. He seemed to contradict himself on separate answers regarding his belief of soul sleep. All in all I didn’t read anything really new or different given his pre-tribulation view. I do like maps and condensed lists of information and this book has some nice ones.
In the end I think this is a nice quick reference that will entice someone to do more homework and study further to understand the basis for the answers to these good questions. I would recommend this for someone who has studied very little prophecy, but for anyone who has already spent more time studying prophetic sections of scripture they will find this book to brief.
I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program

The Soul of C. Lewis’ writings. Each sections starts by giving insight into that particular book and the authors’ interpretation of what motivated Lewis to write it. This is followed by specific passages taken from the work with a commentary and a Bible passage that parallels the message the authors feel Lewis was trying to convey.

I must say that I am a fan of C.S. Lewis and most of his books. I find them enjoyable and filled with some Biblical truths that Lewis approaches with allegorical creativity. I enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to any Lewis enthusiast. I was able to in a sense preview some of Lewis’ other writings that I have not read and I enjoyed seeing some that he wrote prior to accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior. That being said I am cautious of spending too much time finding Biblical truths in what men have written vs. the Bible. I take this book as fun and entertaining, but would otherwise note that the deeper meaning that is being drawn out is the speculation of the authors. So read it, enjoy it, but don’t take it too seriously.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iansbook-n-blog.blogspot.com/2010/09/soul-of-c-s-lewis-meditative-journey.html' title='The Soul of C. Each picture is accompanied by a brief explanation or description of the picture. Along with this is a passage of scripture and a quote that expound on the brilliance and splendor of God’s creation. The quality of the book and the pictures are exemplary.

As I was reading the passages and looking at the amazing photographs I was reminded of how small I am in the whole of God’s creation. I am truly a speck, on a speck, flying around a speck in the speck of this universe. Especially when we remember that God’s hand alone spans the universe. What is man that God is mindful of him? It is amazing grace God would send His Son to die for me alone and that He has a plan for me, a future and a hope. These were some of my thoughts as I was flipping through the pages. I think this is a good book to help you gain perspective and appreciation for the hugeness of God and His awesome power.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program

100 Prayers God Loves to hear, 100 Praise Songs created by Stephen Elkins &illustrated by Tim O’Connor

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 71px; height: 89px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TFnUF08MoTI/AAAAAAAAACQ/QQxdKffb0ic/s400/100prayers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501661616385335602" />
This is a children’s book that contains short prayers, a small explanation, a reminder and an accompanying song. From cover to cover this book emphasizes prayer and encourages kids to know that there is a real God who loves them and wants to hear their prayers to Him. Inside are inspirational, bible, and beloved children’s prayers. While you read you can listen to the accompanying CDs full of praise songs.

As I read through the prayers I also listened to the CDs to hear the songs as I read. From reading the title I thought all the praise songs would be directly related to the prayers. While some of them are more closely related, quite a few aren’t. I was disappointed when I couldn’t find the words to the songs in the book so we could follow along after we read the prayer. We put the music on for my 3 year old son, but he soon lost interest.

I do like how the book emphasizes the need for prayer every day from everyone. It emphasizes that we can express prayer for God’s blessing, for thankfulness, to praise God, to ask for comfort, and many more.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program

The Portable Patriot: Documents, Speeches, and Sermons That Compose the American Soul

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 120px; height: 180px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/TEXaLgpzPeI/AAAAAAAAACI/HQUNPEehlu8/s320/the+portable+patriot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496038811554233826" />
The Portable Patriot is a collection of documents that highlight the development of the American Revolution. It contains materials revealing the deep personal nature of cause and how it developed in the face of opposition. It also contains important historical documents like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
There are so many documents that represent the thoughts and feelings of those on both side of the American Revolution that to compile all of them in one place would take many books. The Portable Patriot is a simple 265 pages. However, I was pleasantly surprised in what was contained in the small pocket sized book. The content did a good job of portraying the hearts and minds of those dedicated to the cause of liberty. It also helped to convey the immense time, energy and care that led to the decision to break away from England.
For someone wanting to learn all about the American Revolution I would highly recommend getting more in depth reviews and accounts. But if someone if wanting to have a nice quick reference on hand I think this book would have a good place in their library.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com <http://BookSneeze.com> book review bloggers program

The Jesus Series: Life and Miracles: Read and Share DVD Bible

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 313px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S_jCbOscqzI/AAAAAAAAACA/4B7oqMWwiZI/s400/dvd+bible+life+and+miracles.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474339120125618994" />
The Jesus Series: Life and Miracles: Read and Share DVD Bible takes the pages of the Read and Share Bible. There are 8 stories included in this DVD that together come to a 30 minute presentation of Jesus' ministry along the shores of Lake Galilee and the villages near Nazareth. The animation and storytelling is geared towards kids.
I watched this with my 3 year old son. I was impressed that it held his attention for a good length of time, but not through all of it during one sitting. However, later in the day he asked to watch it again, so I was glad to see that he enjoyed it.
I was pleased with the storytelling. I thought the voices, music and animation were all well done. While I already have my own vision in my mind’s eyes of how things actually played out. I was happy to see that Jesus appeared and sounded friendly and welcoming. It was interesting to see how the creators imagined how the stories took place with emotions, timing and facial expressions. I think the length of the stories was appropriate to keep kids engaged while including key passages from the scriptures. I like having another DVD that my kids can enjoy and that I know is teaching them about Jesus

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com <http://BookSneeze.com> book review bloggers program

Plan B by Pete Wilson

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 76px; height: 118px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S_Kx0GRsDNI/AAAAAAAAAB4/NbIQPc5SVe8/s400/plan+b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472632005804690642" />
Pete Wilson sets out to give some perspective and some guidance for when things don’t work out the way we thought they would. It focuses on how much of our lives don’t follow our prescribed plan and that we aren’t the only one that is going through these types of situations. Pete writes in a very easy to read style with lots of examples.
While I believe that Pete is really trying to give people hope, I was disappointed with most of the book’s content. In the end of chapter 1 he says “So maybe, just maybe, there is some wisdom in these ancient scriptures that could help you answer the “What now?” question. Maybe there are some truths that will unlock hope in your life once again.” This is the pervasive attitude for most of the book and the last chapter. While I see that Pete is trying to sympathize with people who are dealing with doubt and struggling with life, he offers little in terms of solid Biblical truths that truly do give hope, comfort and ultimately a peace that passes understanding. The only redeeming chapters that do this are chapters 10-13. Then the last chapter returns to the attitude of as Pete puts it, “why do bad things happen to good people.” As Christians we need to remember that no one is righteous and the right question is “why do good things happen to bad people.” Then, while looking to the cross and Jesus we find abundant grace and mercy that is new every morning.
I read this book hoping for some insight in helping people who are dealing with life’s struggles as well as dealing with my own. To these ends I found the book lacking.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com <http://BookSneeze.com> book review bloggers program

Bible Jumble for Kids

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S9-hifsdmWI/AAAAAAAAABg/dztmKgWHtIw/s320/51PlHNWe7DL__SL500_AA300_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467266086646684002" />
Bible Jumble for Kids is intended for kids age 8 and older. It contains 200 puzzles that will teach them about Bible stories and characters. It contains traditional jumbles, mystery person jumbles, jumble detective, jumble criss-cross, find the fumbles and Bible passage jumbles. Each section starts in the beginning in Genesis and moves through the Old Testament and into the New Testament. There are clues or hints given for each one and answers are found in the back.

I have never reviewed a book like this before. I was intrigued by it as I have kids, I like fun facts and I like games. So I thought it would be a good fit and it was. We have had a fun time going through the puzzles and found it to be engaging as adults and potentially stimulating for fun Bible stories based on the people and themes that are the answers for the jumbles. Definitely more fun time are ahead and I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for some fun games with the family.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Wild at Heart

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 309px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S9vLIF2H5hI/AAAAAAAAABY/7-gMVJsbpUs/s320/_200_360_Book.184.cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466185912612808210" />
Wild at Heart by John Eldredge is a look into what the author sees as God’s true design and intent for men versus what our worldly and cultural preconceptions of men are today. He looks to set men free from a world that would strip them of their God given purpose so as to allow them to thrive and find fulfillment and purpose. The basic assertion is that our current society teaches that being aggressive, daring, or brave is something that is OK for kids to do when they are playing games, but that it is something we are taught to grow out of as we mature into adults. The book is written in a pop culture style and is an easy read.
Overall I would say that this book has a good and well meaning message that would benefit many. I do think that to many men settle for much less than what God truly intends for us. As men we need to dream and pray and act. To often we dream, but don’t get clear direction because we neglect the prayer and we fail to act because of fear. That being said I think Eldredge's encouragement for men to be Godly men of action is good. However I would agree with others that Eldredge does give broad generalizations regarding men and his supporting evidence for all his points is somewhat lacking. So I see this book not as the final case building argument that substantiates the changes to be made in men, but more of a starting point. Being more useful as a starting point that gives men pause to consider where they are. And then to be encouraged to express their heart to the Lord as David would in the Psalms while seeking wisdom and direction to act in a manner that is fearing God and not men.

Note: I am a Thomas Nelson Book Reviewer: http://booksneeze.com/#frombrb

Nelson's Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, 3rd Edition

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S6zZq4-csCI/AAAAAAAAABI/TSEpFTomrKU/s320/516LK%252BTsE3L__SL500_AA266_PIkin2,BottomRight,0,34_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452972579710873634" />

This is a Bible handbook that includes maps, charts, pictures and reference material. In addition you can go to Thomasmelson.com/MapsAndCharts and download additional maps and charts that accompany the book.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information that is contained in the book. To me it is more than simply maps and charts as there is a good amount of reference material that goes along with the visual aids. It is formatted like a handbook as it goes through the Old and New Testaments which I found easy to navigate. There is a nice index in the back that also helps you find specific charts quickly. While the information in the book isn’t exhaustive, it is a nice place to start and is a welcome addition to my reference library. It has enough information to help you decide where to go for a more in depth study of whatever subject you plan to delve into.

Note: I am a Thomas Nelson Book Reviewer: http://booksneeze.com/#frombrb

The Word of Promise New Testament Audio Bible by Falcon Picture Group

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S1uATp-6uMI/AAAAAAAAAA4/P0ptYUtrnZA/s320/the+word+of+promise+new+testament" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430074850900883650" />
This is a NKJV Bible audio drama of the New Testament boasting a large cast, soundtrack and special affects. The CDs come is a nice soft case that zips closed. It is a reading of the New Testament and goes verse by verse with out commentary, but it doesn’t include every word. For instance it does not always include phrases like “and they said,” (Lk 19:34), but they generally are included if they infer movement like “But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them,” (Lk 19:33). This makes you pay more attention to the change in voice of who is speaking and the continuity of the conversation. And when you are following along in a program like iTunes you can select a chapter to listen to, but it isn’t possible to select a specific verse. Also, when certain groups of people speak, sometimes you hear multiple voices and sometimes only one. For the disciples they use the voice of Peter to speak for the group.

Overall I have enjoyed listening to this audio Bible. It is engaging and entertaining. It feels like you are listening in on a scene as it unfolds. I find it good to sit and listen with Bible in hand.

Note: I am a Thomas Nelson Book Reviewer: http://booksneeze.com/#frombrb

Buried Alive by Roy Hallums

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iaAdtZsiCSY/S1tBiJIEtiI/AAAAAAAAAAo/ncGMkKV2u5U/s320/buried+alive" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430005830546404898" />
Buried Alive recounts the events surrounding the capture and eventual rescue of Roy Hallums in Iraq. Roy was held hostage for 311 days by his Iraqi captures. Roy is retired military and was working as a civilian during the time of his capture. He is one of the few Americans to have been rescued from being held hostage in Iraq.
The things he suffered and how he endured is impacting. I praise the Lord for his rescue and safe return.
As for the style of the book I was disappointed. While it read easily, I found that the retelling of his life events during his 311-day capture lacked depth. The author simply did not convey the depth and power of Roy’s ordeal. If I were to compare it to a movie, it felt more like a made-for-tv movie than a major motion picture. The book lacked the depth, feeling, and power that I would expect from a story as amazing as Roy’s. Also, I read nothing in the book of Roy’s faith in Christ. To be honest I was expecting the story, being published from Thomas Nelson, to highlight Roy’s faith in Jesus Christ.

Note: I am a Nelson Book Reviewer: http://brb.thomasnelson.com/

NKJV Greatest Stories of the Bible

Thomas Nelson’s the “NKJV Greatest Stories of the Bible” starts by delineating that the book is not a Bible, but is designed to be a compilation of the most well-loved and impacting stories from the Bible. In short I would agree with this description. However I would say that the cover of the book is a bit deceiving as it does look like a Bible. If you read it with the hope that it is a Bible you will be disappointed.
As with any book that bills itself as containing the best of or most beloved stories in the Bible, one might ask who decides what stories are the best. While I feel that the book does include a great many of the most loved stories in the Bible, I found myself thinking of stories that I would have included.
Nelson gives each story a title and for the most part I found them to be simple and accurate. Too often a title for a passage will influence and predispose one’s thoughts on a story. Sometimes this was ok, but often times I would prefer to simply read the passage of scripture and let it speak for itself. Nelson did a good job of making the titles to be simply descriptive without adversely affecting the passage for the most part.
The layout was simple and easy to navigate while using both the table of contents and the index. Also I was pleased the see the scripture references under the titles and the verses marked throughout the stories. I found this a helpful feature to use when comparing it with an actual Bible. Keep in mind while you are reading that it is in the NKJV translation and may differ from your normal Bible if you read another version.
In conclusion, I can see this book being a nice addition to one’s library and fitting in with books of a devotional style.

Note: I am a Nelson Book Reviewer: http://brb.thomasnelson.com/

The Language of Love & Respect

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs’ book, “The Language of Love & Respect”, is a continuation of Dr. Emmerson’s book, “Love & Respect”. If you liked Love & Respect, you will probably like “The Language of Love and Respect”. He starts with a brief review of the principles of “Love & Respect”, but then dives into further clarification regarding communication as this is where he has seen couples struggle the most.
What I like about this book is that it is based on the Biblical principles. You won’t find 10 essential steps or some new doctrine, but you will find his exposition of what the Bible says about husbands loving their wives and wives respecting their husbands. He sticks to God’s Word and expounds on it while in the end still keeping it simple and pointing couples to Ephesians 5 and other scriptural principles the Bible lays out regarding love and respect.
As with his first book, “Love & Respect”, I find it to be redundant and some of the scripture quotes he puts in the boxes I feel are taken out of context and are hard to apply on their own to a successful marriage out side of the story or example he put them with in the book. While he does give examples of couples he has worked with or those that write in to him, I would like to see him refer to more examples that are in the Bible.
Overall I would recommend this book to couples. It is a good reminder of Biblical principles that will help husbands love and wives respect each other and should encourage couples to apply God’s Word to their marriages.

http://brb.thomasnelson.com/

Covering the Basics

Keep flipping back for my latest book review.
